What is First Year Colloquium?

At Kent State, students are enrolled in a one-credit hour course known as First Year Colloquium (FYC) during their first semester. As a new student you will be enrolled in this course when you schedule your classes during PASS.
 
KSU is committed to your successful college experience and therefore First Year Colloquium is required of all new students. Here are some facts about the course:

Successful completion of the First Year Colloquium course is required in order to graduate from Kent State University. All first-semester students will be enrolled in the First Year Colloquium course.

Also in First Year Colloquium, you will:
  1.  Receive academic advising mid-semester
  2.  Schedule your classes for the next semester
  3.  Attend a seminar about health issues regarding college students
  4.  Meet other first year students enrolled in your major
 
Where is First Year Colloquium?

First Year Colloquium classes are affiliated with your college of enrollment and often your selected major. When you arrive at Kent State University for Week of Welcome, you will find out where your first FYC class on August, 24 will be held. This room may change when the semester officially begins, but your instructor will keep you informed about where your class will be meeting once classes begin.

When is First Year Colloquium?

First Year Colloquium classes will meet one day a week for 50 minutes throughout the semester. Attendance is required at each class meeting.
 
Why First Year Colloquium?

Taking an FYC course for the entire semester is a great way to ensure you are transitioning smoothly to college life. Unlike some first year programs that are only held in the beginning of the semester, First Year Colloquium ensures that students have somewhere to go all semester long for answers. Also, because it is held weekly, First Year Colloquium has plenty of time to focus on the many aspects of college life- friends, diversity, studying, etc...

About the Book: The Namesake has been chosen as the focus of this year’s summer reading program.  Reading the book will provide a common ground for you to share with other students on campus and provide a first encounter with the principle of diversity.
