We would like to invite you to explore the Kent State University Science Learning Community Scholars. The SLC Scholars is a great opportunity to live and learn among fellow science majors during your first year while adjusting to college life at Kent State. Students take core coursework together, studay as a community, participate in both fun and educational activities, and build a string network among peers to be successful in college and in your major. Students live together in a common residential hall and are provided individual academic advising. Most importantly, SLC Scholars have unique opportunities to interact with some of Kent State's best faculty.

 

  • What is the Science Learning Community Scholars:
    The SLC Scholars is a living/learning community for first year Kent State students considering a major in biology, chemistry, geology, computer science, math, physics or related fields (Pre-Med, Pre-Pharm, Pre-Dentistry, Med Tech, Bio Tech). The SLC Scholars live together, learn together, and have interaction with some of Kent State's best faculty. SLC Scholars are required to enroll in core courses for their specific majors together. Students also participate in weekly study sessions.

  • What are the benefits of participating in the SLC Scholars:
    • Opportunities to share and develop partnerships with students who have similar academic interests and career aspirations.
    • Unique programming centered on student needs which include group dinners, speakers from fields of student interests, student panels, and workshops to assist students to successfully transition into college.
    • Interaction with faculty through departmental tours, faculty rap sessions in the residence hall and academic advising.
    • Intrusive academic support, instructional sessions, and advising.
    • Participation in a community of scholars beginning in the student's first year through graduation as a Kent State student!
    • Potential to earn book scholarships.
  • Who is eligible to apply:
    Any student with an interest in the above stated fields; and emphasis is placed on recruiting a portion of students who are first-generation college students and groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.

  • How long will students be involved with the SLC:
    SLC Scholars is a community that begins with a student's first year at Kent State through graduation as a Kent State Golden Flash! Levels of commintment vary based on each year and student needs.
 
  • How are students selected:
    Students are selected based on their interest in the specified fields, eligibility requirements, and a combination of measures that indicate a student's readiness to enter into college level science coursework. Those measures include the COMPASS results, high schools grade point average, short answer essays and ACT/SAT scores.
 
  • Where can students get information about the SLC Scholars:
    The Residence Life view book, highlighting the SLC Scholars, is sent to all incoming first year Kent State students. Students may visit the Learning Communities Web site at www.res.kent.edu/LC/. Students may also contact Dana-Lawless-Andric at 330-672-2920 or dlawless@kent.edu.
 
  • Where do SLC Scholars reside during the first year:
    Manchester Residence Hall located near the Kent State Sciences Corridor, Student Center, and Library.
 
  • Where is the SLC Scholars Office located:

  • What are the requirements for participation:
    • First year students admitted to Kent State considering a major in specified fields.
    • Enrollment in targeted SLC Scholars classes
    • Attend weekly group stydy sessions, community meetings
    • Attend faculty advising sessions and rap sessions
    • Meet individually with SLC Scholars staff twice per semester
 
  • Who are the SLC staff and where does it fall within Kent State University
    Under the leadership of Dr. Gary Padak, Dean Undergraduate Studies, and Geraldine Hayes Nelson, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies, the SLC is part of Undergraduate Studies in joint partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences.
