Kent State University
Assessment of Student Academic Achievement Plan
Sample Academic Department Plan
Department of Biological Sciences

Measures: MFAT (SPRING, EACH YEAR), MCAT (FALL & SPRING, EACH YEAR), Graduate Student Placement information: first job placement and publications resulting from research at Kent State (updated each graduation period; data from 1982 to present)

Biological Sciences anticipates use of the data from the outcomes assessment measures in several ways:

MFAT:

  1. Curriculum review, design, and development.
  2. Course design and development.
  3. As an aid in determining department strengths and weaknesses.
  4. Student advising.
  5. Use in undergraduate "recruiting brochure" for the department.

MCAT:

  1. As an indictor of the Pre-Medicine major in preparing students for medical school.
  2. As an indicator for suggesting curriculum review/changes to the College of Arts and Sciences (the Pre-medicine major is a College program and is a second major coupled with an academic department major. The majority or Pre-medicine majors elect one of the BSCI majors as the academic major).

Graduate Student Placement Information:

  1. As an indicator of departmental strengths and weaknesses in preparing students for career opportunities in biological sciences subdisciplines.
  2. As an information source for program and curriculum design and development.
  3. As an indicator for faculty staffing development.
