The Peer Mentoring program matches a student with a personal study coach - someone who can help them acquire the skills and motivation necessary for academic success.
A Peer Mentor will
- Help a student identify and maximize a personal learning style;
- Introduce a student to new study skills and techniques that optimize active learning;
- Assist a student with effectively managing study time to create a proper balance between
class work, employment, family responsibilities, and personal time;
- Train a student how best to prepare for different types of tests/exams and how to reduce
test anxiety;
Peer Mentoring is not necessarily subject-specific. A Peer Mentor can assist a student in all of the courses for which the student is enrolled. Students benefit through becoming aware of themselves as learners and identifying learning styles and strategies that help them to become more academically successful.
Additionally, the Peer Mentoring Program can provide tutorial assistance for students enrolled in the following languages: Spanish, German, French and American Sign Language.
Since the Peer Mentoring program is funded by a federal TRIO grant, students who are first-generation college students, come from low-income backgrounds, or are disabled will be assigned services prior to students who do not meet grant eligibility criteria.
