Freshman 15: Fact or Fiction?
Fact or Fiction? The answer is both! The pounds often gained the first semester of college can take students by surprise. This phenomenon can happen for a number of reasons but the main one is that food is at the center of most college activities. Students still can share in the camaraderie of student life without gaining weight as long as they make informed choices. Your nutritional intake is up to you. There are a number of choices throughout Kent State University Dining Services and listed below are a few guidelines.
There are a number of healthy food alternatives that can be found on campus. Selecting lean turkey, tuna, or a grilled chicken sandwich as opposed to fried chicken, hamburgers, or pizza can dramatically reduce your fat intake. This one is easier said than done, however. Try to limit dessert, potato chips, cookies, doughnuts, and pastries or substitute with fresh fruits and vegetables which are available on every salad bar and at most dining locations. Another example, to reduce your fat intake, try choosing vegetable pizza instead of pepperoni, sausage and double cheese—which are especially high in fat. The average slice of pizza contains 250-300 calories and let’s be honest, “Who stops at one slice?”
