FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
High School Vs. College
Class five days a week, six hours of class per day, homework due every day, a schedule that is made for you by your academic advisor, and when you get home.... your parents probably do your laundry when that time of the week comes around. Sound familiar to you? This is all about to change. You will be spending, on average, 15 hours total in the class room per week. The rest of your time is up to you to manage. Professors may assign homework which may or may not
factor into your grade. And when it comes to laundry, the original color of your clothes may or may not be the same by the end of the year. Ultimately the idea is that some things are going to change in the next few months. What follows are some general tips to help you prepare for these changes.
-
•Talk with professors; it’s a huge perk if the teacher knows your name.
-
•Invest in a planner; it will make it easier to map out your days.
-
•Find the right place that is conducive to your study habits
-
•Go to class; material in class is not the same as that found in the text.
-
•Be thoroughly familiar with the class syllabus; it is the framework for the class
-
•Ask for help; academic assistance is widely available, but up to you to go get it.
-
•Meet with your advisor; they will help you take the right courses to graduate on time.
-
•Get involved; this is a great way to resume build, meet people, relax and have fun.
