My career path to becoming an Academic Adviser:
During my last semester at Kent State I worked with the E.A.S.S. program as a scheduling assistant and I found this experience to be extremely rewarding. After graduating from college and working in the corporate sector for a few years, I had a desire to get involved in education. I started out as a substitute teacher and I did some work with programs like Upward Bound and Job Corps to gain some experience. I returned to Kent State University in 1999 to pursue my teaching certification. During my second tour at Kent, I seized an opportunity to become an Admissions Counselor, which marked my beginning in higher education. After viewing firsthand everything that goes into the recruitment of students, I wanted to be more involved in keeping them at the university. With the further development of retention initiatives by the university academic advising was a natural progression.

What RETAIN Advisers do for freshman students:
We will improve the advising transition for students from the first-semester University Orientation course to second semester individualized academic advising. Our focus lies specifically on freshman students and challenges they face getting acclimated to the university.

My beliefs about college, college students, and academic advising:
- The brief time that a student spends in college can have a profound impact on the rest of their life. It is imperative that the student maximizes the opportunity.
- Learn yourself so that you may know yourself. Many students arrive on campus as extensions of others. College is great in that it allows time for uninhibited introspection.
- Quality academic advising goes hand in hand with the success of the student and provides them with needed insight into their academic and career aspirations.

My goals/plans for my future:
As vague as it sounds, to continue to assist people. Personally, my goal is to continue to grow and develop as a human being.
